Margaritaville Beach Resort Playa Flamingo 20 Jun 2022

It's a Sweet Life Living By The Salty Sea…Jimmy Buffett

A must-do activity when visiting the Margaritaville Beach Resort in Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica, is to explore Guanacaste's beautiful Pacific Ocean shoreline. One of the best ways to get out on the ocean is by taking a spectacular sunset cruise on Margaritaville's very own yacht, the Endeavour. It is a short walk or a two-minute car ride to the boat's mooring in Potrero Bay, where the crew will pick you up in a dinghy and zip you across the bay to the yacht. When the Flamingo Marina opens this spring or summer the boat will have its own slip at the dock, but until then, enjoy an extra adventure just to board the vessel!  Once aboard, Captain Danny Vazquez and his mate will greet you with a smile and your choice of beer, wine, water, or a soft drink.  We enjoyed popping the cork on a sparkling Prosecco to celebrate the day.

The Endeavor's usual route runs northbound along the scenic mountainous coastline, viewing the nearby beaches of Potrero, La Penca, Azucar y Danta.  To the west are Las Islas Catalinas (Catalina Islands), famed for their excellent deep-water scuba diving locations, and all around are smaller isles and rock formations.  An abundance of seabirds and pelicans will accompany your journey, and if you're lucky you may spot a sea turtle or two, manta rays, or even a pod of dolphins.  Cruising out beyond the more populated beaches along the shore, the boat pulls up near a small beach surrounded by abundant nature, with no human development in view. There are rocky outcrops on both sides of this little bay, framing the sparkling white sand known as Playa de Amor or Honeymoon Beach, and featuring underwater coral formations that make for excellent snorkeling (the gear is included).

After an hour of swimming, snorkeling, and playing on the beach if you choose, the crew puts out an excellent spread of appetizers, or boquitas as the Ticos call them, which varies, but in our case included delicious ceviche, fruit pinchos (fresh fruit pieces on a wooden stick, like kebabs), mini-sandwiches, and dips with vegetables and plantains chips.  There are two private bathrooms and cabins in which you can change into dry clothes and then the real show begins.  If you are fortunate enough to have a sunny day with just a few added clouds for contrast, the sunset will be nothing short of amazing!  Captain and crew will help you get the perfect photo to make you the envy of your friends back home, and guide you safely home amid the deep pinks, purples, blues and indigos of another memorable Flamingo Beach sunset.
